Description
Part of a larger parish complex, this church goes largely unnoticed even by keen-eyed city dwellers, despite the fact there is a street running through it. Breaking with religious tradition, this winning competition entry designed by Nuno Portas and Nuno Teotónio Pereira brings back the model of the primitive Roman church, reinstating the relationship between religious space and the neighbouring community. The stripped, urban character conveyed by the use of concrete is exquisitely explored by nuancing space, detail and light. Never failing to impress its visitors, this church was the recipient of the Valmor Award in 1975 and listed as National Monument in 2010.
