Description
Ribeira das Naus holds a near-mythical place in the local (Lisbon) and national Portuguese identity, as the former “Dry Dock” for naval construction during the Portuguese Discoveries. The myth ties the factual building of the caravels ( or Naus) with the possibility of their leading role in a crucial historical period – the charting of world-spanning travel routes, with Portugal spearheading the first-ever globalization phenomenum. The unearthing and integration of partially-buried fossil elements was key to determining the site’s character and to the overall process of recreating Ribeira das Naus. The intervention also features the redesign of the riverfront area, rescuing this iconic spot from dereliction and turning it into one of the city’s top public spaces.
